NWSA Activist Scholarship

Applications were due September 15, 2019.

Application to the NWSA Activist Scholarship is through a nomination process. All applicants must include a nomination letter in their application. Applicants can self-nominate.

At the NWSA conference, we seek to embrace both the activist roots of feminist scholarship and the contemporary intersectional and trans-national feminist leadership that seeks to build a better future for us all. The goal of this conference is to build stronger bridges between activists and scholars. Those of us working in the Academy need to be in closer dialogue with organizers attempting to put theory into practice.  Conversely, organizers could benefit from scholarship that helps to frame and contextualize the work they are doing on the ground and the larger historical trajectory out of which it emerges.

Toward this end, in 2017, we created 17 travel scholarships to facilitate the robust participation of a cohort of national feminist organizers working in the Movement for Black Lives. In 2018, we grew the scholarship pool and were able to support 21 feminist activists organizing in different movements.
Thank you to our generous donors!

NWSA Registration Scholarships and Travel Grants
Applications were due May 22, 2019.
Applicants must be NWSA individual members in order for their applications to be considered. Application period is May 1 - 22, 2019.  Only online applications can be considered. People applying for the conference registration scholarship and travel grants use the same application. Please note: the Submittable application requires a separate login from your NWSA login.

Each year applications for funding far exceed the number of grants NWSA can give. We want to close that gap, and you can make a difference. Help us raise funds to support need-based travel grants so that all of our members can attend the conference, present their work, and mobilize for the future.

NWSA offers a limited number of registration scholarships and travel grants to accepted presenters. Students, scholars, and activists with a demonstrated need for financial assistance are encouraged to apply.  Particular consideration will be given to assisting presenters who have not previously received NWSA travel grants.  The registration scholarships and grants are also intended to encourage the participation of individuals from under-represented constituencies in the NWSA. Currently, due to tax implications, this opportunity is open to applicants based in North America only (we are working on this).

In 2018, NWSA received 200 complete applications.  NWSA currently provides a total of $20,000 in travel fund support and 100 complimentary conference registrations.  The committee reviewed the applications and made the following allocations:
  • 11 applicants received complimentary conference registration.
  • 80 applicants received complimentary conference registration and $250 in travel funds
