How to Be Understood and Taken Seriously Outside of Academia, Too

When:  May 8, 2025 from 06:00 PM to 07:30 PM (ET)

📣 We're excited and immensely grateful to continue our collaboration with Coriolis Company in offering a workshop "How to Be Understood and Taken Seriously Outside of Academia, Too"!

We're curating spaces that anchor the work that makes our field of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality studies rich and dynamic; now more than ever, we're committed to supporting our members chart success as feminist scholars and activists!

📚 About the Workshop 📚 : Academic writing often gets a bad rap as too dense, dry, and theory-heavy. But when the public tunes out scholarly work, especially work from marginalized voices, important contributions are lost. For scholars of color, queer and trans scholars, first-gen PhDs, and others working at the margins, the stakes are even higher because they can’t afford to be left out of public conversations!

This session is for early-career academics navigating questions like: Will my department and tenure committee still take me seriously if I write magazine articles or give podcast interviews about my work? How do I make my research accessible without dumbing it down, or worse, sounding like I’m performing for someone else’s approval? Can I create real change, or am I just yelling into the void? Is it safe to share my story when social media backlash, doxxing and other threats are so common?

Led by Nanda Dyssou, founder of Coriolis Company who has worked with hundreds of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and disabled scholars, this webinar offers space to think critically and also practically about bringing your work out into the wider world. We’ll explore what it means to "translate" your research without losing its depth, how to stay grounded in your voice and politics, and how to use public facing opportunities to further your name in your field, without compromising who you are.

📌 Stay tuned for more opportunities to learn from Nanda and her team - they'll be joining us in Borikén for our 45th Annual Conference this November!

📋 All are welcome to register for NWSA events and co-sponsored opportunities. NWSA Members should login to their accounts for the smoothest event registration process.
