The Art of Holding On: Coalition as Feminist Craft

When:  May 23, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 01:00 PM (ET)

In the essay “Speaking Silence, and Shifting Listening Space: The NWSA Lesbian Caucus in the Early Years,” Tucker Farley outlines the contentious relationships between feminists, lesbians, and women of color at the NWSA founding convention and the first NWSA conferences. In recent years, however, lesbians and women of color seem to have gained greater visibility in NWSA (and similar) organizations. What then, accounts for declining engagement in both caucuses?

We are no longer just naming racism and homophobia—we are reckoning with anti-Blackness, xenophobia, transphobia, and the tangled legacies of exclusion that still haunt feminist spaces. If movement stalls at these intersections, what possibilities remain for building coalitions across them? In this community conversation, join Stephanie Andrea Allen, Co-Chair of the Women of Color Caucus, and Dominique C. Hill, Chair of the Lesbian Caucus, as they reflect on what it means to work across differences when the stakes are high and solidarity is hard-won. What does feminist coalition look like now—fractured, reimagined, or reborn?

This event is a program of the Lesbian Caucus and the Women of Color Caucus. You can become a member of either caucus space (or both) by completing their respective dues.
