PEN America: Protecting Free Speech and the Freedom to Learn on Campus & Online

Four members of the PEN America staff will talk about their work to support Free Expression on campuses, including resources for Women’s and Gender Studies faculty, staff, studies & allies.

Amy Reid, Senior Manager, Freedom to Learn. Formerly Director of Gender Studies at New College of Florida. “Between Jawboning and Overcompliance: Navigating Legislative Attacks on DEI and WGS”

Clare Carter, Program Assistant, Freedom to Learn. “Student Advocacy Against Censorship”

Previously, Clare worked with the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) as the Program Assistant, engaging with Quaker communities across the country in FCNL’s advocacy work. While in her graduate studies, she researched feminist and political philosophy especially surrounding issues of free will and oppression.

beck Haberstroh, Program Manager, Digital Safety Training and Resources. “Online Harassment in Higher Education” 

We will briefly summarize the state of online harassment campaigns against faculty and the impacts of this phenomenon on research, teaching, and higher education communities broadly.  We will then share how some organizations are mobilizing to address this problem and steps participants can take to fight back.
