Cancellation of 2020 NWSA Annual Conference
Monday, April 27, 2020
Dear NWSA Community,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to announce that the Governing Council has decided to cancel the in-person 2020 NWSA Annual Conference slated for November 12-15, in Minneapolis, MN. After careful deliberations and in consultation with our staff, we have concluded that, even if the health crisis is resolved, it is likely that attending the conference would be difficult for a good portion of our membership.
The human toll, social consequences, and economic impact of this health crisis is far reaching. Institutions have already enacted austerity measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing travel budgets, furloughing staff, and cutting costs. Some of our members may lose their jobs or face salary cuts. Many graduate students are encountering obstacles to continuing in their programs. Several of us have lost loved ones and our communities are hurting.
We know that for many of you NWSA also serves as a space of healing and affirmation, which is why cancellation was an especially difficult decision. Nevertheless, we will do our best to create other communal spaces until we are able to meet again. The Conference Co-Chairs and I are considering alternatives for conference programming and will let you know if that is possible.
Because of this recent decision, NWSA staff will not send conference acceptance/rejection notifications in May as planned.
We will experience a significant financial setback due to the conference cancellation. NWSA is a vital organization, especially at this political moment. Even though we are unable to host the in-person conference, I ask for you to maintain your membership. Renewing your membership and making a charitable contribution will help keep our organization financially sound for the future. Please see my video message to our membership (below) that shares my thoughts on why feminist scholarship matters more than ever. We also ask our membership to share their experiences, difficulties and moments of hope in this moment and and use our hashtag, #2020NWSA.
If you have questions about this decision or any other NWSA matters, please email us at email@example.com. I appreciate your patience as our small staff works through the cancellation details and responds to inquiries. Wishing you and those around you the very best in this difficult time.
Premilla Nadasen, NWSA President
