2008 NWSA Speakers Bureau

Our successful speakers bureau, now in its third year, is now offering speakers for 2008

These speakers address a wide range of topics of critical importance to Women's Studies and would make a valuable contribution to your institution's programming.

The speakers have volunteered to give at least one lecture in the 2008-2009 academic year on behalf of NWSA, pending their availability.

Speakers donate their time to NWSA, and host institutions pay a $1,000 speaker's fee directly to the National Women's Studies Association, in addition to the speaker's travel and lodging expenses. Speakers' fees will support new and existing projects at NWSA.

If you would like to arrange a lecture or need further information, please click here to see the speakers offered and to fill out a request form.

Guide to Graduate Work in Women's and Gender Studies

The National Women's Studies Association has begun to update its most-requested publication, the Guide to Graduate Work in Women's and Gender Studies.

This valuable tool offers prospective students detailed information about programs' faculty, courses, and specializations along with an introductory essay on how to choose a graduate program.

It is the most comprehensive listing of graduate Women's and Gender Studies programs available, and our latest version will be available as a free searchable database on the NWSA website or in print form.

Also note that participants will be included in a planned Ms. Magazine special pull-out section on women's studies programs nationally.

In order to have your program's information included in the latest edition of the Guide you must complete the online form and submit a $35 member listing fee or $55 nonmember listing fee.

Click here to pay online and complete the form.

Deadline to Submit Program Listing: Monday, April 14, 2008.

If you require an invoice, please call (301) 403-0407 or email nwsaoffice@nwsa.org to request one.

We expect to launch the 2008 Guide in late summer, just in time for prospective students to consider as they research programs and prepare applications for 2009 admission. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about this process, and I look forward to receiving your updated program listing.

National Women's Studies Association Awarded  Additional $350,000 From Ford Foundation Grant

NWSA is pleased to announce generous ongoing support from The Ford Foundation.  Under the 2-year $350,000 grant, NWSA will continue building organizational capacity, implement its strategic plan, and strengthen its Women of Color Leadership Project through collaboration with Spelman College.

NWSA Ford Foundation General Support Grant Executive Summary

NWSA is pleased to announce generous ongoing support from The Ford Foundation.  Under the 2-year $350,000 grant, NWSA will continue building organizational capacity, implement its strategic plan, and strengthen its Women of Color Leadership Project through collaboration with Spelman College.

Grant Activities
Under the grant, NWSA will do the following:

  • Implement its strategic plan according to the schedule set in Year 1.
  • Provide enhanced support for women of color programs and services.
  • Convene a meeting of women’s and gender studies doctoral program chairs.
  • Convene two meetings of its established Research Scholars’ Advisory Board.
  • Continue data collection work on mapping the field of women’s studies in the United States.
  • Continue to strengthen online and conference member services.

The grant will help to create a stronger, intellectually vibrant, increasingly diverse, and more visible Association better positioned to meet the demands of a field that is flourishing, with strong growth at the doctoral level, but also facing significant challenges in the current political and educational climate.

With over 2,000 individual and institutional members worldwide, NWSA has been the leading organization dedicated to advancing feminist scholarship, education, service, and community activism for nearly 30 years. NWSA conducts and disseminates research on graduate programs and trends in women’s and gender studies in addition to hosting an annual conference to highlight the latest issues in feminist scholarship, teaching, and activism.

Women’s Studies on the Chopping Block

Kim Vaz, chair of the University of South Florida’s women’s studies department, has been in this position before. She’s heard talk that her program, now the only free-standing one of its kind in Florida, would lose its autonomy, face cutbacks, or worse.
All of that’s on the table again for women’s studies, Africana studies and other small programs and centers after a task force of faculty, students and staff released a report this month that calls for major cuts in order to save the university millions of dollars in operating expenses.
