ABOUT THE WOMEN'S CENTERS COMMITTEE

Women's Centers have representation on the NWSA Governing Council as a standing committee. This is more than a symbolic recognition of the important role that women's centers play in feminist education.

NWSA recognizes that "women's studies" is broader than what happens in the classroom. NWSA acknowledges women's centers as chief out-of-class feminist educators and encourages participation in the national organization.

Campus-based women's centers have a long history of working together with women's studies to transform the curriculum, the campus environment, and society at large. The Women's Centers Committee of NWSA provides an opportunity for women's center directors, staff and others to gather and share information, ideas, challenges, successes and support. The Women's Centers Committee sponsors an annual pre-conference event as well as sessions during the NWSA annual conference.

THE NWSA WOMEN'S CENTERS LISTSERV

The purpose of the CAList is to improve communication and networking among center administrators in the U.S., and also to provide assistance, trouble-shooting, support, and information to each other.

This is an unmoderated discussion list for center administrators, people involved in the nitty-gritty of developing programming of all sorts, at all kinds of institutions.

Because it is crucial that programs support our national organization, participants must hold current institutional membership.

Call for Proposals: NWSA Handbook for Women’s Centers

We are seeking contributions for a handbook for women’s centers. The handbook is being developed by the National Women’s Studies Association Women’s Centers Committee; when complete, it will be available for download or purchase from the NWSA website.

The Handbook will provide overviews of “typical” women’s centers, sample practices and strategies for dealing with common concerns, as well as a selection of useful resources.

REGIONAL WOMEN'S CENTERS MEETINGS

Greetings to all from the Women's Center at Virginia Tech!!
We are hosting the 2009 Annual Southeastern Regional Women's Centers Meeting in June.
This meeting is open to all who are interested. We are utilizing the WRAC-L listserv to reach all of the Southeastern centers and well beyond. For years we have embraced the participation of our colleagues from other regions!

The impact of budget reductions appears to be significantly impacting folks' ability to travel this year. To date, registration for the annual meeting is very low. On Friday, May 22nd, we will make a final decision as to whether or not to proceed with our June meeting plans. As such, if you wish to attend, we strongly encourage you to register no later than Thursday, May 21st.

Our plan is to gather on the Virginia Tech campus at mid-day on Thursday, June 4th and end the meeting around lunchtime on Friday, June 5th. We will hold some of our sessions at the VT Women's Center and others at the nearby Graduate Life Center. The agenda for the meeting will be both semi-structured and participant-directed so that our time together will best fit the needs and interests of a range of Women's Centers.

This group meets annually to reflect, reconnect and refuel while sharing ideas and best practices. We welcome any and all ideas about the shape and structure of the meeting, and hope to receive a lot more registrations.

This year the registration fee will be $40. This fee will include two lunches, a catered dinner, snacks, and a light breakfast (breakfast is included at the hotel where we have a block of rooms held). The deadline is May 14 for a lower priced room. Click here to access the meeting registration, , fill out, and submit. Y

The local hotel with the best rates is the Holiday Inn at 900 Prices Fork Road. They can be reached at 540-552-7001. The rooms are $85 per night (plus tax) when you reference the Southeast Regional Women's Center Meeting, and breakfast is included in the rate. After May 14th the price will go up to $95. The contact person at the Holiday inn is Jessica Townshend. If you would like to stay elsewhere, please let me know and I will provide a list of other options.

If you would like to learn a bit more about our Center please visit our website at www.womenscenter.vt.edu Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions.
